How ABCD began...
ABCD started its journey as a Regional Forum in 1985. This forum was initiated as a common platform where all the Diocesan Social Service Societies (DSSS) to come together and interact. Earlier, it was the Diocesan Directors forum; and amongst them one person was selected as secretary to convene the meetings.
In 1987 the Forum was renamed the ‘Association of Bengal Collaborators for Development” (ABCD). It is the official agency for relief and development under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of West Bengal, India.
ABCD is well known at community as well as stakeholders level, through our different programme activities and projects - CBDP, Safe Migration, Natural Resource Management, Youth Animation, Capacity Building Programme, Routine Immunisation and Polio Eradication.
ABCD is also the Secretariat for State Inter Agency Group - it is recognized by the Government of West Bengal and the National Disaster Management Authority. Thus it has goodwill and strong interface with the local as well as state Government.
Since ABCD is the official agency for relief and development under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of West Bengal, it has good linkage with all the Diocesan Social Service Societies of West Bengal - and can act in a coordinated manner. We also work along with other international humanitarian aid agencies like UNICEF, Caritas India, CRS, etc; and other local and national NGOs.
